Description
Black sesame (Sesamum indicum) is a nutrient-dense oilseed crop known for its rich, nutty flavor and high antioxidant content More aromatic than white sesame, it’s valued both for culinary uses and for its oil. The plants thrive in hot, dry climates once established, fitting well in warm-season UAE gardens.
When to Plant in the UAE (Field Planting)
-
Late February to March.
Sesame prefers daytime temperatures above 23 °C and can withstand high heat and low humidity—typical of UAE’s environment
Tips for Planting
-
Select a fully sunny spot with well-draining, light soil. Sesame dislikes water-logged soils and excess moisture
-
Sow seeds directly about 0.5–1 cm deep, spacing them generously (≈ 20–30 cm apart) to accommodate tall growth (up to 1–1.2 meters)
-
Water sparingly—seedlings need moisture for initial germination, but established plants are drought-tolerant and too much water can harm them
-
Manage weeds early; weeding around 15–25 days after sowing helps reduce competition for nutrients
-
Sesame is heat-loving and thrives on full sun; shaded conditions hinder performance
-
Expect bloom and seed development over a 3–5 month growth cycle—harvest when seed capsules begin to dry and turning yellow
