Description
Black Sesame is an ancient, warm-season seed crop prized for its small black seeds, distinctive nutty flavor, and versatility in the kitchen. The plants produce attractive upright stems with delicate flowers followed by seed pods filled with nutritious sesame seeds. Black sesame seeds can be used in baking, breads, salads, sauces, spice blends, desserts, tahini, and Asian and Middle Eastern dishes. The plants are heat-loving and perform well in warm, sunny conditions, making them well suited to the UAE.
When to Plant in the UAE
- Outdoors: Direct sow seeds in early September and early March.
- Avoid: Peak summer planting, as extreme heat can make germination and establishment difficult for young plants.
Planting & Care Tips
- Light & Soil: Grow in full sun in fertile, loose, well-draining soil enriched with compost and organic matter.
- Depth & Germination: Sow seeds approximately 0.5–1 cm deep. Germination typically occurs within 7–14 days under warm conditions.
- Spacing: Space plants 15–30 cm apart, with 45–60 cm between rows.
- Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist during germination and early growth. Once established, water moderately and avoid waterlogged conditions.
- Feeding: Add compost before planting. Apply a balanced organic fertilizer during active growth if the soil is poor, but avoid excessive nitrogen.
- Support: Taller plants may benefit from light staking, particularly in windy locations.
- Harvest: Allow the seed pods to mature and begin drying on the plant. Harvest when the pods have developed fully and begin to turn dry, before they open and release the seeds.
- Harvesting Tips: Cut mature seed-bearing stems and place them upside down in a dry, well-ventilated location. Allow the pods to dry completely, then collect and clean the sesame seeds.
