Description

Formanova Beet is a productive heirloom variety prized for its distinctive long, cylindrical roots, smooth dark red skin, and rich, earthy-sweet flavor. Unlike traditional round beets, Formanova produces elongated roots that can reach 20–25 cm in length, making them excellent for slicing, roasting, boiling, pickling, salads, and fresh cooking. The nutritious green tops are also edible and can be harvested young. This vigorous variety performs exceptionally well during the UAE’s cool growing season.

• Outdoors: Direct sow seeds from October through February, when temperatures are cool.

Planting & Care Tips

• Light & Soil: Grow in full sun to partial shade in loose, fertile, well-draining soil enriched with compost. Remove stones and hard clumps to encourage smooth, straight roots.
• Depth & Germination: Sow seeds 1–2 cm deep. Germination typically occurs within 5–14 days.
• Spacing: Thin seedlings to 8–10 cm apart, with 25–30 cm between rows.
• Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during germination and root development, while avoiding waterlogged conditions.
• Feeding: Mix compost into the soil before planting. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage leafy growth at the expense of root development.
• Harvest: Baby roots can be harvested in approximately 35–45 days, while mature roots are typically ready in 60–75 days.
• Harvesting Tips: Harvest roots when they reach the desired size. Young leaves can be harvested regularly, leaving the central growing point intact for continued growth.
