Description

Nasturtium Jewel Mix is a colorful and easy-to-grow flowering mix producing vibrant blooms in shades of red, orange, yellow, and gold. The plants have attractive rounded, shield-shaped leaves and a spreading or trailing growth habit, making them excellent for flower beds, borders, hanging baskets, containers, raised beds, and vegetable gardens. Both the flowers and leaves are edible, with a pleasantly peppery flavor that adds color and flavor to salads, sandwiches, and garnishes. The bright flowers also attract bees, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinators.

When to Plant in the UAE

  • Outdoors: Direct sow seeds throughout October.
  • Best results: Plant as temperatures begin to moderate and provide full sun with good drainage.
  • Avoid: Peak summer heat, as extreme temperatures can reduce germination and stress young plants.

Planting & Care Tips

  • Light & Soil: Grow in full sun to partial shade in fertile, well-draining soil. Nasturtiums can tolerate moderately poor soil.
  • Depth & Germination: Soak seeds in water for several hours before planting to help soften the seed coat. Sow approximately 1–2 cm deep. Germination typically occurs within 7–14 days.
  • Spacing: Space plants approximately 20–30 cm apart. Provide additional room for trailing varieties to spread.
  • Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist during germination and early growth. Once established, water moderately and avoid waterlogged soil.
  • Feeding: Add compost before planting if needed. Avoid excessive fertilizer, especially high nitrogen, as it can produce abundant leaves with fewer flowers.
  • Flowering: Plants generally begin flowering approximately 50–70 days after sowing, depending on growing conditions.
  • Support: Trailing plants can be allowed to cascade from containers or trained along low supports.
  • Harvesting: Harvest young leaves and flowers as needed. Pick flowers when fully open and use them fresh for the best appearance and flavor.
  • Pollinators: The colorful flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects.
