Description
Japanese Black Trifle (also known as Trifele Black) is a striking Russian heirloom tomato known for its abundant, pear-shaped fruits (around 110–170 g) that ripen into a deep burgundy color with attractive green shoulders. These indeterminate vines feature potato‑leaf foliage and deliver rich, complex flavor with excellent resistance to cracking—making them perfect for slicing, canning, roasting, or fresh use.
When to Plant in the UAE
-
Start Indoors: Sow seeds early to mid‑August in warm, sheltered spots (soil temp of ≥ 24 °C) to ensure successful germination.
-
Transplant Outdoors: Move seedlings outdoors in early October, once night temperatures reliably stay above 15 °C.
-
Direct Outdoors (optional): You may also direct-sow seeds outdoors in early October if the soil is warm and conditions are favorable.
This planting window aligns with UAE’s extended growing season and promotes strong development and extended harvest.
Growing Timeline
-
Days to First Harvest: Approximately 80–85 days from transplanting.
Planting & Care Tips
-
Sun & Soil: Choose a site with full sun (6–8 hours/day) and loamy, well-draining, fertile soil enriched with compost.
-
Depth & Support: Plant seedlings deep (up to the first leaf), encouraging strong roots. Provide robust staking or caging, as vines can reach heights of 1.5–2 m.
-
Spacing: Space plants 45–60 cm apart, with 90 cm between rows to ensure good air circulation.
-
Watering: Maintain consistent soil moisture (not waterlogged). Mulching helps retain moisture and reduce fruit cracking.
-
Fertilization: Begin with a balanced fertilizer at planting. Reduce nitrogen later, favoring phosphorus and potassium as fruits form.
-
Harvest: Harvest when fruits are fully colored and slightly soft to touch. Frequent harvesting encourages continued production throughout the season.
