Description

Chile de Arbol is a popular heirloom-style Mexican hot pepper variety known for its slender, elongated fruits and distinctive bright-red color when mature. The peppers have a crisp texture when fresh and develop a deeper, richer flavor when dried.

With a heat level typically around 15,000–30,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHU), Chile de Arbol offers a noticeable, clean heat without overwhelming the natural pepper flavor. The dried peppers are particularly popular for making chili powder, flakes, salsas, and traditional Mexican sauces.

The plants are productive and well suited to containers, raised beds, and home vegetable gardens.

When to Plant in the UAE

  • Indoors: Start seeds indoors in August.
  • Outdoors: Transplant strong seedlings in October.
  • Start seeds in a protected environment during the UAE summer and transplant outdoors once temperatures become more suitable for pepper production.

Planting & Care Tips

  • Sunlight: Full sun, ideally 6–8 hours daily.
  • Soil: Fertile, well-draining soil enriched with compost or organic matter.
  • Sowing depth: Approximately 0.5 cm deep.
  • Germination: Usually 7–14 days under warm conditions.
  • Spacing: 45–60 cm between plants.
  • Row spacing: 60–75 cm.
  • Watering: Keep soil consistently moist but never waterlogged. Allow the surface to dry slightly between waterings.
  • Feeding: Use compost before planting and a balanced vegetable or pepper fertilizer during active growth and fruit production.
  • Support: Plants generally have a compact growth habit, but a small stake can help support branches when heavily loaded with peppers.
  • Harvest: Pick green for a fresher, sharper flavor or allow the peppers to mature fully to bright red for deeper flavor and drying.
  • Drying: Mature red peppers can be dried whole and stored for later use in chili flakes, powders, and sauces.
